How to access ebooks, audiobooks, online journals & other online material
1. Library ebooks
Perform a search using the Library catalogue
Most eBooks will appear amongst results of a normal catalogue search, but are more easily located if the search is narrowed by format ’EBook’. Ebooks may be identified by the call number ‘Online’ and a hyperlink. All remote access requires authentication with a Moore ID and password. Narrow your result by selecting ‘eBook’ in the format box:
Some ebooks are available through the database Ebsco. The title is visible in the catalogue search, but there is often no obvious link to the full text. To access material, click on the blue title of your selected item, then select “View Ebsco Details.” Copyright law permits a maximum download of one chapter per ebook, but you may read the whole book online without downloading it.
2. Library audiobooks
Library membership includes access to audio recordings of selected books to assist you in study and research. We offer two ways to listen to audiobooks: via a link in the Library catalogue, or on the Libby app.
Listening via the Library catalogue
Type the title you want to listen to in the Library catalogue search box, and refine the search to ‘audio books.’ Next, select ‘sample’ to listen to an excerpt of the text (usually the introduction) in order to adjust the volume to suit you. Then click the ‘View Online’ link to gain access to the audio recording.
Example: To listen to the audiobook version of Karl Barth’s 1962 lectures on evangelical theology, click the highlighted links in the following images.
Listening on the Libby app
Download the Libby app from Google Play Store or Apple app store. Use the ‘menu’ (three horizontal lines at the centre-bottom of screen) to add Moore College Library. Then search for and select Moore College Library. Next, sign in using your Moore College ID and password. You’re good to go!
In the Libby app, you can do things like changing playback speed, and adding bookmarks, notes and highlights to your audiobook.
3. Online Journals
Online journals contain the same material as print journals, but with the added benefits of searchable text and remote access. To locate information within a journal, it is helpful to have the title, year of publication, and the issue and volume number of the journal. This information is also required when referencing.
There are two common ways to locate journal articles online: by title, or by keyword.
Locating an article by title
If you know the title of an article, type it in the search box of the Library catalogue. The result should display the name of the journal at the top. Click on the journal name and enter your Moore College ID and password to verify that you are authorized to gain access. Next, click on the blue link below the ‘Full Text Access’ notice.
In the next screen, journal details will appear, along with links to the available volumes arranged by date. Select the year and volume/issue number of the article you want to read.
In the next screen, links to individual articles from the volume/issue you selected will appear, available in PDF format. The icons on the left indicate whether the content is an article or a review of another’s work.
Locating an article by keyword
In the top menu bar, change “Everything” to “Database Search”. The second search drop-down should display as “All EDS fields”.
Next, enter your search term(s) into the search box and click “Search”. The results will be restricted to electronic material relevant to the search term(s).
Refine these results to Academic Journals and full text using the “Source type” and “Limiters” widgets on the right of the screen:
A refined list of results from electronic academic journals relating to your key word will appear:
3. Other online material
Moore College library user membership provides access to other resources to further assist you in research and study. On the left side of the main Library page, click the “Online Collections” tab, then select from the menu of online material other than databases. There is a separate Skills Guide outlining how to access and make the most of the Library’s extensive suite of databases for study and research.
Next, browse your chosen Online Collection and make your selection. Resources are listed in alphabetical order by title (see, for example, Figure 19). Authentication with your Moore ID and password will be required if you are accessing these materials from off-site.
In some cases, you will also be required to set up an account with a specific provider before you can access their material. Such accounts should be free – contact service.desk@moore.edu.au if you are unable to log in to a specific provider after accessing their site via your Moore College Library login.
