MOD Administrator Checklist: Workshop setup
Each student is allocated three submissions to review.
scheduled allocation
3 per reviewer
Students can see who their assessors are (i.e. assessments are not anonymous).
The tutor assesses all submissions and gives their assessment a weight equal to the number of student assessments (in this case 3).
Assessment grading method: 'Comparison with the weightiest assessment' with a tolerance percentage of 30% (the default).
The split in the mark for each workshop between submission and assessment will be 70/30.
Use self-assessment: False
The submission phase will open from Monday to Sunday evening, then the following Monday to Sunday for assessment.
Students who don't submit won't be able to assess others and will miss out on the workshop marks.
Set up open/close dates for submission and assessment phases. Once all settings set, move to 'Submission' phase (it won't be available until open date, but it will ignore the dates if it's still in the Setup stage).
Tutor Checklist: Managing the Workshop
Submission Phase
Check workshop is in the submission phase.
Post a reminder to students if required (e.g. it's the first workshop for the subject).
Midway or closer to the deadline, check that some students have made a submission. If there are none, you might post a reminder to check if there are any problems.
Assessment Phase
Check the workshop has moved to Assessment Phase automatically.
At the start of the assessment phase: Review the allocations Moodle has made (three assessments per submission).
Change allocations if required (Click 'Allocate submissions'). You can remove specific allocations, and then redo the random allocation (leave 'Remove current allocations' NOT checked). Alternatively, you can change allocations manually. It is best to make changes only as required once in the Assessment Phase, rather than removing and re-allocating all allocations.
If any submission doesn't have three peer-assessors allocated, allocate a tutor acting as a student to assess that submission. (Check with the MOD Administrator)
Assess each and every submission with a weighting of three. Open each submission in a new tab (Ctrl/Cmd+Click on each submission title). Leave the overall workshop open as the first tab, for reference.
For each submission:
Click Assess
Complete the assessment form, and include an overall feedback comment as a tutor.
Set the 'weight' to three. If more than three students have been allocated to a submission, make your weighting equal to the number of peer assessments allocated.
Once you've assessed all submissions, refresh the workshop page to see all submissions and assessments. You should see your own assessments, with a '@3' next to the score to signify the weight.
You can view a single assessment by clicking the assessment score.
Grading Evaluation Phase
Check you have assessed each and every submission (There might be late submissions if these are allowed). Tutors can still assess submissions after the end of the assessment phase.
Check you have assigned your assessment the correct weight in each submission.
Move the workshop to 'Grading evaluation phase' by clicking on the lightbulb icon.
Check that all students have assessed all submissions assigned to them. Moodle will not penalise a student who completes some but not all the submissions assigned to them. However, if they do not complete any assessment, Moodle assigns 0 to their assessment element of the mark. However, you can click on the assigned assessment, and select a value of 0 in the 'Override grade for assessment’ field. Moodle will then do its mean as usual.
Under 'Grading evaluation method', select 'Comparison with the weightiest assessment'. The page will reload.
For 'Comparison of assessments', select '30% of tolerance'.
Click 'Re-calculate grades'. A grade will be shown for each student's submission and assessment (in separate columns).
Check the grades Moodle has assigned carefully. Contact Martin if something doesn't look right.
Closed Phase
Close the Workshop once you have reviewed the scores, by clicking on the lightbulb icon next to 'Closed'. This will push the marks to the students' gradebook, and they will be able to see them.
Notify students grades are available.
