How to report junk or phishing emails
Scammers will often use current events such as pandemics, natural disasters or major IT outages to try and take advantage of people across Australia. Generally, these emails with either be:
Junk emails, which are usually some form of unwanted advertisement for a product or service
Phishing emails, which are usually pretending to be a legitimate party (e.g. your bank or telephone company) and are trying to steal your personal/confidential information such as username and password or banking information.
One of the things you can do to help stop these emails, is report them as junk or phishing through Outlook. This gives Microsoft more information that it can use as it tries to filter out the good emails from the bad, which also helps protect other students and faculty.
Instructions
Select the email your want to report
Under the home tab at the top of the page, press the “Report Message” button
Select what type of email it is, i.e. Junk or Phishing
You’ll then be asked if you want to Report the email. Click the blue “Report” button.
If you’ve accidentally marked an email as Junk, you can change it. Go to your Junk folder, select the email, click on Report message, and select “Not Junk”.
I can’t see the “Report Message” menu
If you can’t see the Report Message menu it might be hiding in the overflow area of your toolbar (macOS) or ribbon bar (Windows). You can rearrange these to make it easier to get to and to hide or demote buttons you don’t use as often.
For more help with this process, refer to the Customize the ribbon in Office instructions from Microsoft Support or get in touch with the Moore College IT Helpdesk.
